Old Friends honour Sondheim in style

There was not a dry eye in the house when Stephen Sondheim's "Old Friends" took to the stage at the theatre named in his honour for last night's gala celebration. Friends old and new delivered showstopper after showstopper - with multiple standing ovations throughout the night - and paid tribute to the man they all worshipped as a god of the theatre.

Dame Judi Dench, Bernadette Peters, Maria Friedman, Michael Ball, Janie Dee, Jenna Russell and - most touchingly of all - Julia McKenzie were among the dozens who delivered an unforgettable once-in-a-lifetime concert that heralded the end of an era... and, thanks to students from Mountview and the Royal Academy of Music, the beginning of another.
