SSSSPOTY 2019 winner Stuart Thompson named "Most Promising Newcomer" at Critics Circle Awards

Stuart Thompson has been acknowledged by the Critics Circle for his portrayal of Moritz in Rupert Goold’s production of Spring Awakening. Stuart, a LAMDA graduate and current Stephen Sondheim Society Student Performer of the Year (winning at the last event in 2019), was joint winner of the Jack Tinker Award for Most Promising Newcomer, shared with Samuel Creasy (The Book of Dust – La Belle Sauvage).

Goold's revival of Spring Awakening at the Almeida Theatre took home the coveted Best Musical award, beating off stiff competition from Rebecca Frecknall’s revival of Cabaret.

The 31st Critics Circle Awards were held on Sunday 3 April 2022 at the Ham Yard Hotel. The Awards, founded in 1989, are run by the Drama Section of The Critics’ Circle, which has existed since 1913 to protect and promote cultural criticism in the UK.

Stuart won the 2019 SSSSPOTY competition with his performances of Sondheim's “Franklin Shepard, Inc.” (Merrily We Roll Along) and new song “My Thing” by Ben Glasstone & Poppy Burton-Morgan.
