Cynthia Erivo to pay tribute to Sondheim at the Grammy Awards
Variety has revealed that Cynthia Erivo, Rachel Zegler, Ben Platt and Leslie Odom Jr. will remember Stephen Sondheim in song at the 2022 Grammy Awards, as part of the ceremony's traditional "In Memoriam" segment.
Sondheim won eight Grammys over the years (the same number as his Tony Award wins), from 17 nominations, so a tribute is not unexpected.
Erivo was a finalist in the 2009 Stephen Sondheim Society Student Performer of the Year competition, where she sang "The Miller's Son", which she also performed in 2019 at the Sondheim Award Gala. Zegler is fresh from her breakthrough role as Maria in Spielberg's West Side Story; Platt sang "It Takes Two” on the Take Me to the World: A Sondheim 90th Birthday Celebration livestream in 2020 (and also popped in to say hello at the Society's monthly cabaret at the Phoenix Theatre back in 2018!); and Odom Jr starred in the all-African-American Sondheim review Being Alive at The Philadelphia Theater Company in 2007.
Sondheim's Grammy Awards:
